Be my Valentine in a crafty way

by Keri Zingle

If you love doing crafts with your kids, but you never know what to do with their finished projects, Valentine’s Day is the perfect solution. Almost every Valentine craft can turn into a project that can be given to a special person. So get crafty, and help the kids say, “Be My Valentine” with these easy ideas:

Key to my heart

Using cardboard from an old cereal box, draw a rectangle approximately 20-centimetres long by 2.5-cm wide. Draw a heart at one end of the rectangle to make the top of the key. ‘Cut’ the key by placing your child’s hands along the rectangle, then tracing fingertips. Cover the key with tinfoil and glue on some heart shaped decorations, or make a sparkly key by covering with glitter.

Hugging coupon book

A simple, fun way to practice counting to five (or 10) with your kids: Cut five pieces of paper to the same size (eg. 4 x 6), and decorate each page with hearts. Start the first page with one heart, the second page with two hearts, etc., up to five hearts on the last page. Decorate with drawings, lace, ribbons, stickers, etc. Write ‘Redeemable for x Hugs’, where ‘x’ is the number of hearts on the page. Make a cover for your coupon book, and staple or tie together.

Lacing hearts envelope

Cut two large hearts of identical size. Starting at the point, punch holes around the edges, spaced approximately 1 cm apart and stopping just before bumps. Using a red ribbon, lace the hearts together to create a pocket for a special valentine message.

Heart and flower bracelets

A simple group activity – one toilet paper roll makes four bracelets. Cut a toilet paper roll in half crosswise, then in half crosswise again to make four small circles. Snip each circle to make a bracelet that will slip onto child’s wrist. Decorate bracelet; cut hearts and flowers from construction paper and glue around bracelet. Add other small decorations such as beads, pompoms, and glitter.
