What's the vibe today . . .

Sniffles be gone

Snow on the ground may be an indication that we are still dealing with lingering winter cold and flu bugs. In fact, this Kindervibe mom is sniffing away with two children recovering from a nasty cold. With the recent bad press about Vicks VapoRub, and Health Canada’s warning that children under six years old shouldn’t be treated with cough and cold medication, we’ve got the good news on a natural alternative that works at helping get rid of the sniffles.

The sniffles vibe

Dimpleskins Naturals, a BC-based natural skincare line for children made by a mom, has created the Sniffles natural Eucalyptus rub. Menthol-free, the 100 per cent natural aromatherapy balm contains a blend of pure and organic essential oils that are recommended to use on children over the age of one.

Why we like it

Sniffles is completely natural and we find that it offered the same benefits of a VapoRub. When we applied it to the chest of Kindervibe product tester Marley, almost 4, we found that her painful cough loosened and she was able to sleep much better. Even for an adult, the balm works well. Place a little under the nose and the stuffiness seemed to disappear. In addition to the natural factor, we like the balm’s scent.

Even though the warning with Vicks VapoRub is that it should not be applied to children under two, we still like to give our children, regardless of their age, natural alternatives first, and if they don’t work or the cold worsens, we’ll definitely visit our doctor.

Where to find it

You can order Sniffles online at Dimpleskins Naturals or for a list of retailers in your neighbourhood, visit Dimpleskins online.

VapoRub FYI

Vicks VapoRub rated a four out of ten for a moderate hazard by the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic safety database. You can find the ingredients in VapoRub on the Vicks website. The VapoRub contains camphor, which is a cough suppressant and topical analgesic. Apparently camphor can be toxic if swallowed so the VapoRub should not be applied in or near the nostrils.
